GET TO KNOW pa777ience
Known for her dynamic visuals and electro-soul sounds, pa777ience has a signature production style nostalgic of 90s neo-soul with a hint of future RnB.
We sat down with pa777ience, one of our current Conscious artists, to talk about her musical journey ahead of the release of her single ‘Swipe Right’.
Tell us about yourself and your musical journey.
To be honest, I’d never considered a career in music. It was my high school music teacher who was really influential in empowering my confidence to pursue music outside of high school. So after graduation, I went straight into a Bachelor of Music and hopped right into writing, producing and releasing my first EP “Vulnerable” in 2019.
Music has opened so many doors for me and given me friendships, brought me healing, confidence and motivated me to get the most out of life. I’m blessed to be in community with so many otherworldly creatives - making art with others is such a beautiful gift. Music has taken me on so many journeys, and experiences that I don’t think I would’ve had if I didn’t take this path. Supporting Ngaiire was when I felt most confident in my music journey and that confidence propelled me into my next level of growth. I’ve recently played at Sydney Olympic Park and went on a national tour, as well as playing Sydney Opera House, which has been one of my latest ‘pinch me’ moments. I write music as an outlet to express myself and channel my creativity, and to hopefully connect with others who can relate to me. I want to be a positive representation to people and young people as I didn’t have many role models who looked like me to empower me in ways I might have sometimes needed.
WHO AND WHAT INSPIRES YOUR MUSIC?
I don’t have to look far to draw inspiration as we are lucky to have other producers here in Sydney such as Milan Ring and Vetta Borne creating new horizons and redefining what it means to be a producer/creative. Both have formed their individual standout style and this something that has empowered me to lead with my own vision. The message these women remind me of is, ‘I don’t have to make music like everyone else, I can do it my way and I can do it myself’. I want to contribute to the positive representation and the conversation they both started, and continue to challenge norms within our industry. Additionally, I draw inspiration from my lived experiences as a twenty-something queer woman of colour. Stylistically I admire music and fashion from the 90’s RnB / hip-hop era, and I try to embody my own interpretation of this culture and legacy.
The track you’ve developed for the Conscious program, ‘Swipe Right’, drops August 24. What was the creative process like?
‘Swipe Right’ is the first song I’m releasing after a pandemic-induced hiatus (haha). It was formed around the ideas of finding connection during lockdowns and isolation. Everybody was pushed to live their lives online, and a part of this included dating. If I’m honest, looking back, I lost my inspiration and motivation to do music during this time because of the socio-political climate. So ‘Swipe Right’ is an earmark of where I was at that time, and a reflection of my internal world.
I had such a great time pushing myself out of my comfort zone in this project with the Conscious team. ‘Swipe Right’ is different to my usual sound and I really surprised myself with this one. It’s unlocked so many creative doors in my mind, and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my production style. This track was the catalyst for me learning that I can grow and that I don’t have to be boxed into one genre.
